In this humorous Christmas Carol parody, the famous helium-voiced rodents are preparing for Christmas, but Alvin is much more interested in the presents he'll be getting. When Alvin wrecks his lonely neighbor Mr. Carroll's flower garden, Mr. Carroll yells at him, inspiring Alvin to think that Mr. Carroll's nothing but an old grouch. With the help of the(Very familiar-looking!) ghosts of Christmas past, present, and future, however, Alvin may soon discover who the real Scrooge is in this situation. Please enjoy!

Book Review: Little Wolf's Haunted Hall for Small Horrors by Ian Whybrow

Here's a review of the third volume of this very cool and highy underrated series.
Little Wolf's Uncle Bigbad, proving that he won't let a little thing like death stop him, has returned as a ghost with many dark and spooky powers, and LW, along with his buddies Yeller, Stubbs, and guest pest Smellybreff, who plan to open a Scare School to help little critters get their scream on, persuade him to be their "School Spirit." Uncle Bigbad obliges, but, apparently being just as untrustworthy as he was in life, he makes things too scary, and ends up scaring the pants off of their students...
Uncle Bigbad makes a wager with the group, promising to share his power of finding lost treasure with them if they can find someone who can stand up to him for five minutes. LW searches high and low, before coming across a bear cub named Normus who's super-strong, brave, and a bit of a bully. Normus proves to be more than a match for Uncle Bigbad's dark powers, but this endeavor may end up being more trouble than it's worth, because Normus spends most of his time bullying and bashing LW and his friends. Can Little and his crew get Normus on their side in time to win the bet?
Not only is that rude, but also very unsanitary! :-p
My thoughts: One of the more interesting books in this series with many exciting moments. This volume gives us our first in-depth look at the various denizens of the Frettning Forest(turtles, lions, bats, alligators, weasels et al.) as well as more of the various surrounding areas. Normus' briefly-seen family are good, well-written characters, as is, of course, Uncle Bigbad. I must admit that Mister Twister's unexplained villain status does still bug me a little bit, but other than this, I had no major complaints. All in all, an excellent and very enjoyable addition to this series, and a must-have for any Little Wolf aficionado.

Book Review: Little Wolf's Diary of Daring Deeds by Ian Whybrow
Here's a review of the second volume in this very nifty book series.
Little Wolf is planning to open an Adventure Academy where his(late) Uncle Bigbad's Cunning College once was, and is pleased for his joke-loving cousin Yeller(named for his REALLY LOUD VOICE!*) to come join him. Unfortunately, he soon becomes doubly disappointed when not only do his parents decide not to come stay with them, but his little brother Smellybreff does. Now, LW had indicated several times in the previous book that he didn't like Smellybreff very much, and in this volume we truly see why. Smells is the most whiny, bossy, greedy, pesky, ill-mannered little brat you'd ever care to meet!(And those are just some of his good points! :-D) His parents, very obliviously however, think that Smells is cute and can do no wrong, possibly indicating that his misdeeds occur in their absence.
Eventually, LW and his friends get a call from a Mister Marvo who agrees to help them set up the attractions at Adventure Academy; unfortunately, little do they know that he's actually Mister Twister the fox, Uncle Bigbad's former business partner and master of disguise, who cubnaps Smellybreff and steals Uncle Bigbad's treasure. Now it's up to Little, Yeller, and their new travelling buddy Stubbs the crow(known for mostly saying "Ark" with a few other words, occasionally) to save the little pest. Along the way, they face off with a mountain lion, explore several strange towns, climb the Grim Mountains, visit a hot springs, charter a boat, and encounter a friendly(and very helpful) group of whales. Will they be able to rescue Smells and retrieve the treasue before it's too late?
My thoughts: Although this book had its interesting moments, I personally didn't think it was one of this series' stronger entries. To be fair, its purpose seemed to be mainly to establish the characters and storyline for the series in general. Out of fairness also, the crew's adventures and the locations they visit are quite interesting, and there are some good moments of character development as the crew attempt to overcome their worst fears: Stubbs' fear of flying, LW's fear of loud noises, and Yeller's fear of snow and cold weather(The latter being because the cold weakens his voice).
My only real major beef with this book was:
Mister Twister's sudden villain status; in the previous book, he was a good guy, and even warned LW not to trust Uncle Bigbad. Granted, the series did need an antagonist, but still.
Despite its minor flaws, this book is by no means terrible. In fact, it's a very good, fun, and very well-written book with many memorable characters. A must have for any Little Wolf fan.
*In this respect, he takes after Uncle Bigbad a little bit.

Book Review: The Half and Half Dog by Lisa Gross
Here's a review of one of the winning entries of the Written and Illustrated By... Awards Contest of 1987.
This charming book, written by then-twelve year old animal lover Lisa Gross, concerns a(very cute!) little puppy who looks half like a Golden Retriever and half like a Scottie(By contrast to his Golden Retriever and Scottie brothers and sisters). Like kindred spirits Dumbo the Flying Elephant and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, the poor little fellow is ridiculed for his appearance by people and dogs alike. Along the way, the puppy escapes the pound, visits a meat market, has a mishap with shoe polish in an attempt to disguise himself, and finds and unexpected friend in a gruff but kindhearted bulldog named Max. But will he ever find an owner who will love and accept him for who he is?
My thoughts: This is a very sweet, heartwarming, and beautifully written book. The style in which the book was written is interesting, in that it's much longer than your average picture book, but shorter than your average novel, making it easily accessible to a broad audience, and each illustration's a beaut'. Readers will immediately fall in love with the little puppy and sympathize with his situation, and the story delivers an excellent message about how all of us are beautiful and special the way we are. A top-notch pick for dog lovers everywhere.
Fun Fact: Author Lisa Gross hadn't actually owned any dogs at the time, owning two cats and two birds instead.

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Bookstore: Orangutan Tongs by Jon Agee
A mouthful of mush.
This very humorous book of tongue-twisting poems by the Palindrome King himself contains such profundities as the situation of an orangutan who has trouble eating his meal at a restaurant, the kind of noise that annoys a noisy oyster, the triumphs of a bubble gum blowing champ, the disadvantages of getting on the bad side of either an overeager ogre or a surly soldier, the things that a dodo'll do, the ways of a club for people who only use purple paper, and the unfortunate breakup between Patty Petty and Pete. If you like wacky poems, you like tongue twisters, and especially if you like wacky tongue-twisting poems, this is the book for you!

Book Review: Looking for Bobowicz by Daniel Pinkwater
A recent offering from the one of the world's wackiest authors!
In this follow-up to Pinkwater's famous book The Hoboken Chicken Emergency, Nick(Whose real name, which he prefers not to reveal for obious reasons, is Ivan Itch) moves to the city of Hoboken with his eccentric parents. Nick quickly befriends two other kids named Loretta Fischetti and Bruno Ugg, and spends time hanging out with them, reading Classics Comics and drinking Dr. Pedwee's soda**.
While looking through the basement of Nick's new house one day, the three of them come across an old newspaper article telling about the time a giant chicken terrorized the city several years ago. On top of that, there have been several incidents of a mysterious "Phantom" stealing people's stuff...including Nick's own bike! Can Nick and his new friends, with the help of a series of eccentric adults, get to the bottom of this?
My thoughts: This is a very funny, intriguing book, written in Pinkwater's signature madcap style. The illustrations(Drawn by Daniel's wife Jill) are excellent, and the character's wacky names(Starr Lackawanna, Meehan the Bum et al.) are a lot of fun. Both this and The Hoboken Chicken Emergency are definite must-reads for Pinkwater fans.

Book Review: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl
How sweet it is.
WOOHOO! YEAH! 250 POSTS!!! WHOOPEE! ALL RIGHT! YAAAAY! Ahh...uhmm...(Ahem), now on to the review...
This book, which is most likely Roald Dahl's most popular, concerns Charlie Bucket, a poor paperboy who's family never has anything decent to eat. In fact, more than anything, they'd really like some nice candy! One day, Charlie finds a Golden Ticket, which will earn him a tour of famous candymaker Willy Wonka's factory, as well as a year's supply of candy! Charlie is joined on the tour by four obnoxious bratty kids: gluttonous Augustus Gloop, greedy little rich girl Veruca Salt, gum-chewing champion Violet Beaureguarde, and television addict Mike Teavee, who are all vying for the prize, too. Can Charlie beat out the(highly unpleasant) competition and claim his sweet reward?
My thoughts: Although it's probably up for debate as to which of Roald Dahl's books is the best, this one's certainly a pretty good candidate! The storyline is well-written, the characters are very interesting(particularly the Oompa Loompas), and the illustrations* are absolutely lovely. This book was so popular, in fact, that it inspired not one, but two movies and a real-life brand of candy. A definite must-read for any Roald Dahl fan.
*The illustrations here are from an older and more rare copy of the book, illustrated by Joseph Schindelman. There's a more common version of this book, illustrated by Quentin Blake, which is also very nifty!

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Bookstore: Tales For the Perfect Child by Florence Parry Heide
Well, nobody's perfect.
Don't let this book's title fool you, these kids are little monsters! (Literally and figuratively, even!
:-D) This collection of humorous, tongue-in-cheek short stories introduces us to such unforgettable characters as Ruby, whose mom asks her to watch her baby brother for her, and she watches as he wrecks everything in his path, Arthur, who dislikes the fancy outfit his mom insists that he wear, so he messes it up, Bertha, who wants to watch TV, but her mother would like her to go out and get some fresh air, so she hides her shoes, and Irving, who figures out a clever way to get out of going to a piano recital with his annoying cousin Irma. If you like monsters, you like funny books, and especially if you like funny books about monster kids, this is the book for you!
Kids, don't try this at home! :-D

Joke of the Week #40
A chicken walks into a library; he goes up to the librarian's desk. "Book."
"You'd like a book?" the librarian replies.
"Book."
The librarian hands the chicken a book, and he leaves. The next day, the chicken comes back. "Book, book."
"You'd like two books?"
"Book, book."
The librarian hands the chicken two books, and he leaves again. The next day, the chicken comes back again. "Book, book, book."
"You'd like three books?"
"Book, book, book."
The librarian hands the chicken three books, and he leaves yet again. Well, by now, the librarian's curiosity is getting the better of her, so she decides to follow the chicken and see where he goes.
She follows him down the sidewalk, through an alleyway, through a field, and down to a pond. The chicken stops by the edge of the pond, upon which, a frog swims up to him. The chicken lays the books out in front of the frog, who looks each of them over and says, "Read it, read it, read it..."

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Bookstore:Donald Duck in A Christmas for Shacktown by Carl Barks
He's my little pal,
Quack, Quack, Quack, Donald Duck,
Daisy is his gal,
Quack, Quack, Quack, Donald Duck,
In his sailor suit,
Quack, Quack, Quack, Donald Duck,
Gee, I think he's cute!
I love the way he waddles and I like to hear him talk,
And when somebody makes him mad,
QUACK! QUACK! QUACK! How he can squawk!
Quack, Quack, Quack, Donald Duck,
Cocky as can be,
Quack, Quack, Quack, Donald Duck,
Here's what he taught me,
When someone knocks you down,
Get right up again,
Show some pluck like Donald Duck,
QUACK, QUACK, QUACK, QUACK, QUACK!
The second volume in Carl Bark's ever popular Donald Duck series, this high-quality collection catalogues the further adventures of a certain famous duck, his nephews Huey, Dewey, and Louie, his girlfriend Daisy, his Uncle Scrooge, and guest pest Gladstone Gander. Some must-reads are:
A Christmas for Shacktown-Donald, Daisy, and the kids all want to chip in money to make a good Christmas for the impoverished families of Shacktown. There's just one tiny little itsy-bitsy(fairly huge) caveat: getting tight-fisted Uncle Scrooge to part with so much as a penny!(As the ever-quotable Babs Bunny once said, "Playing on his sympathy has worse odds than the lottery!") How will Donald get the money?
The Big Bin on Killmotor Hill-Uncle Scrooge builds a new maximum-security money bin, which the Beagle Boys evince an interest in. Can Donald help save his uncle's fortune?
The Screaming Cowboy-Donald composes and sells a song to a radio station, thus winning a trip to the mountains. Little does he know that a hermit living there despises the song! (There's a Little Bad Wolf lookalike kid in this story, BTW.)
Oh, please.
Statuesque Spendthrifts-One of the funnier stories in this collection, Uncle Scrooge and the Maharajah of Howdoyustan feud with each other over who's richer by each building bigger and bigger statues.
Rocket Wing Saves the Day-The kids adopt a racing pidgeon and train him for an upcoming pidgeon race; there's just one problem...he's afraid of train whistles!
The Think Box Bollix-Donald is annoyed when the kids begin helping wacky inventor Gyro Gearloose with his inventions, and tries to play a prank on them...but the prank backfires(majorly)!
An excellent read, and a good companion piece to Lost in the Andes.

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Bookstore:The Armpit of Doom by Kenn Nesbitt
Proceed with extreme caution.
A very humorous book of poems with very nifty anime style artwork, with such profundities as the titular poem, concerning the boy with the world's stankyest armpit*, "Gilman Glum", about the boy who not only loves sucking his thumb, but claims that his thumb is the tastiest ever, "Pansy P. Petunia", regarding a girl who smells like flowers, and thus never needs to bathe, "Rudy Tude" which concerns the world's rudest guy, "Our Teacher Sings the Beatles", regarding a teacher who sings a bevy of popular songs, "Happy Birthday," in which the narrator gives the birthday boy or girl such very "generous" gifts as smelly gym socks, used pens, old batteries, dust balls et al.**, "When Frankenstein Was Just a Kid", telling of the time in the famous monster's younger days when he ate so many green vegetables he ended up with his signature green color, "Auntie Gravity", concerning the aunt who bakes levitating baked goods with her "Secret X" ingedient***, and "My Pig Won't Let Me Watch TV", told from the POV of a kid whose pet pig hogs the remote. If you like funny poems and you like anime, this is the book for you!

Gotta love stupid criminals. You know, one wonders if Bertie might have been one of Tubbs' ancestors...(Honestly, he missed a good bet if he wasn't!)

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Bookstore:The Utter Zoo:An Alphabet by Edward Gorey
One wonders what those critters on the cover are. Tigers? Dogs? Big doggie-tiger-like-thingies?
A amusing poem by the late, great Edward Gorey, cataloguing twenty-six different bizarre creatures, such as the shy Dawbis, the glue-eating Ipagoggy, the vicious, dinosauric Crunk, the dancing Posby, and the microscopic Ulp.
It may give the elephant a run for its money as the largest land mammal.

This is a very nifty little book of weird and wacky animal poems, with many very clever little ditties, such as the titular tale of a certain undies-clad spider, "Cara's Parrot", which concerns a bodybuilding bird, "Has Anyone Seen My Chameleon?", concerning the disadvantages of playing hide-and-seek with a chameleon, "Banana Dan", the sad(or, actually, more pathetic!) tale of a once brave monkey, "Speedy Sid", which concerns a racing squid, "Gabby's Baby Beagle", a tongue-twisting poem about a girl and her baby beagle, who has a taste for bagels, "An Ordinary Day", which catalogues a cavalcade of Unusually Uninteresting Sights, "Get Me out of the Fish Tank", a song set to the tune of "Take Me out to the Ball Game", told from the POV of a cat who tried to get a snack and fell in, and "My Hamster has a Skateboard", concerning a skateboarding hamster who's not so easy on his wheels. (Let's face it-Tony Hawk he ain't!) If you like funny poems, you like animals, and especially if you like funny poems about animals, this is the book for you!
