Book Review: Looking for Bobowicz by Daniel Pinkwater

 

A recent offering from the one of the world's wackiest authors!

 

 

In this follow-up to Pinkwater's famous book The Hoboken Chicken Emergency, Nick(Whose real name, which he prefers not to reveal for obious reasons, is Ivan Itch) moves to the city of Hoboken with his eccentric parents. Nick quickly befriends two other kids named Loretta Fischetti and Bruno Ugg, and spends time hanging out with them, reading Classics Comics and drinking Dr. Pedwee's soda**.

 

 

While looking through the basement of Nick's new house one day, the three of them come across an old newspaper article telling about the time a giant chicken terrorized the city several years ago. On top of that, there have been several incidents of a mysterious "Phantom" stealing people's stuff...including Nick's own bike! Can Nick and his new friends, with the help of a series of eccentric adults, get to the bottom of this?

 

 

My thoughts: This is a very funny, intriguing book, written in Pinkwater's signature madcap style. The illustrations(Drawn by Daniel's wife Jill) are excellent, and the character's wacky names(Starr Lackawanna, Meehan the Bum et al.) are a lot of fun. Both this and The Hoboken Chicken Emergency are definite must-reads for Pinkwater fans.

The second volume in Carl Bark's ever popular Donald Duck series, this high-quality collection catalogues the further adventures of a certain famous duck, his nephews Huey, Dewey, and Louie, his girlfriend Daisy, his Uncle Scrooge, and guest pest Gladstone Gander. Some must-reads are:

 

 

A Christmas for Shacktown-Donald, Daisy, and the kids all want to chip in money to make a good Christmas for the impoverished families of Shacktown. There's just one tiny little itsy-bitsy(fairly huge) caveat: getting tight-fisted Uncle Scrooge to part with so much as a penny!(As the ever-quotable Babs Bunny once said, "Playing on his sympathy has worse odds than the lottery!") How will Donald get the money?

 

The Big Bin on Killmotor Hill-Uncle Scrooge builds a new maximum-security money bin, which the Beagle Boys evince an interest in. Can Donald help save his uncle's fortune?

 

The Screaming Cowboy-Donald composes and sells a song to a radio station, thus winning a trip to the mountains. Little does he know that a hermit living there despises the song! (There's a Little Bad Wolf lookalike kid in this story, BTW.)

 

Oh, please.

 

Statuesque Spendthrifts-One of the funnier stories in this collection, Uncle Scrooge and the Maharajah of Howdoyustan feud with each other over who's richer by each building bigger and bigger statues.

 

Rocket Wing Saves the Day-The kids adopt a racing pidgeon and train him for an upcoming pidgeon race; there's just one problem...he's afraid of train whistles!

 

 

The Think Box Bollix-Donald is annoyed when the kids begin helping wacky inventor Gyro Gearloose with his inventions, and tries to play a prank on them...but the prank backfires(majorly)!

 

 

 

An excellent read, and a good companion piece to Lost in the Andes.

Domo? Arigato!

Look out! Here comes Domo!

 

 

Domo:The Manga is an Ameri-manga produced by Tokyopop, starring Tsuneo Goda's iconic monster. The comic, which is drawn by several different artists(two of whom being Jared Hodges and Lindsay Cibos of Peach Fuzz fame), follows the adventures of Domo and his(super-cute!) forest friends: the wise old rabbit Mr. Usaji, the sensible weasel Tashanna, the mother and son bats Maya and Mario(No relation), who are little more than background characters, the shy, sweet Bear Boy, the fox trio, consisting of Brother Fox, the moody oldest sibling, Fox Boy, the easygoing middle child, and Esther, the prank-loving youngest, and Hungry Bear, who's uhm, well...a rather large, hungry bear! :-D

 

Much of the humor of these comics derives from Domo's tendency to overdo things, which often leads to a bigger problem than the one he's currently trying to solve.

 

The comic consists of six short stories:

 

Don't Try This at Home-Domo enjoys watching a samurai movie a little too much!

 

Hero For a Day-After watching a superhero movie, Domo decides to become a superhero...but ends up doing much more harm than good!*

 

"Fix, fix, fix, fix...FIXED!" Too funny! :-D

 

Soapbox Road Warrior-Domo and the others compete in a soapbox derby for the prize of a month's supply of delicious peaches. Who will win?

 

The Ultimate Beetle-Domo trains a beetle for a beetle fight, but as usual, things don't go as planned.

 

Life Is Just a Game-Tashanna invites a bored Domo over to her house to play video games; when he ends up breaking her video game system, he remedies(and we use this term loosely) the situation by having the other animals act out a "real-life" video game.

 

 

 

Living in the Now-Tashanna endeavors to improve the quality of everyone's lives by introducing them to cell phones...but will the animals ever figure them out?**

 

 

My Thoughts:This is a very funny, enjoyable, very well-written and well-drawn comic. The characters(especially Domo himself) are very cute, likeable and full of personality, and the storylines are very fun and entertaining. The book even contains a(very nifty) Domo Fanart section. All in all, a very nifty comic that any Domo aficionado is sure to love.

Just Peachy

Peach Fuzz is a nifty little ameri-manga series written by husband and wife team Jared Hodges and Lindsay Cibos. This short-lived series, which was the winner of Tokyopop's second Rising Stars of Manga competition, chronicles the adventures of sweet fourth-grader Amanda Keller and her wacky, lovable pet ferret, Peach.(No relation.)

Volume One:

The first volume establishes the story and characters. Nine-year-old Amanda's mother has finally consented to let her have a pet, but Amanda doesn't want an ordinary one, such as the usual dog, cat, fish, hamster et al. One look at the ferrets, however, and she's instantly smitten. She picks one and names her Peach(due to her fuzziness), little knowing that Peach is a very prissy ferret who fancies herself a princess(Princess Peach?), and has the Walter Mitty-esque tendency to fantasize ordinary things as extraordinary, such as envisioning her cage as a dungeon, Amanda's toys as monsters, and Amanda's hand as a vicious, five-headed beast called the Handra!

Worse still, when set upon by this "Handra", Peach bites in defense! It's up to Amanda to train Peach to behave...but will she be successful?

Volume Two:

 

Amanda has successfully trained Peach(Finally!) and plans to take her to school for show-and-tell. Amanda isn't very popular in school, and hopes that her new pet will stack the odds in her favor;unfortunately, while Peach is quite popular with the class, Amanda herself still gets left out. :-(  A plan is hatched by Amanda's popular(and sometimes sassy) friend Kim Chang(pictured on the cover, above) to get her in good with the class: a ferret costume, made by Kim herself!

Unfortunately, after Amanda gets good props from the teacher for her costume, the(VERY nasty!) school bullies Phil and Tim conspire against her. These guys are really mean, but fortunately, they get their well-deserved comeuppance in the end.

Also introduced in this book is Kim's pet ferret Pavaratty, or "Pava" for short.(Pictured with her on the cover.) Pava is a conceited sort who fancies himself a famous actor/singer/dancer; he rudely chides Peach, denying that she could ever be considered a princess, at which she then gives him what for!

Volume Three:

After Peach escapes from her cage yet again, Amanda's athletic(and rather superstitious) friend Mimi Santini(pictured on the cover, above) suggests that Peach may simply be lonely. At Amanda's request, her mom consents to let her buy a second ferret; Amanda selects a fancy ferret(Peach is a sable) whom her mom names Edwin(after a hero in her favorite novel). Peach is elated by Edwin's presence, fancying him the ferret prince she's been pining for...an emotion that's quickly shattered once she gets to know him. Edwin is very klutzy, goofy, ill-mannered, overly dramatic, and very, very loopy(He believes that vets are aliens, 'nuff said), far from the prince she'd envisioned.

Amanda pays a visit to Mimi's house, where she meets Mimi's equally superstitious family, who are all unnaturally obsessed with mushrooms(...Huh? Mushrooms?), as well as Mimi's albino ferrets Truffle and Spore, with mention also made of the late Puffball(All three of whom are pictured with her on the cover). Like their owner, Truffle and Spore are very superstitious sorts(But also somewhat creepy!); they warn Peach of the curse plaguing their land, and suggest that she and Edwin might be its next victims. Peach, however doesn't believe them...at least, not at first!

Have mercy, those albino ferrets are creepy...but sorta' creepy cool, though.

My thoughts:Overall, this is a very cool, interesting, hard-to-put-down series of comics, with a very clever concept(A comic about a ferret). The comics are well-written, with ginger-peachy artwork, and likeable, relatable characters; the ferrets in particular are cute, funny, and lovable. Each of the books also have some very nifty extra features, such as:

-Peach's Monster Compendium, chronicling the various "beasts" Peach has encountered throughout the story.

-Pavaratty's Ferret Terminology,  in which Pava educates the reading audience on various ferret facts.

-Bios of each major character, complete with sketches.

-Sketches diagramming each major story location(Amanda's house, Mimi's house, the school et al.)

My only major beefs about this series were: 

-The series didn't last very long, which IMHO was quite a shame, considering how good it was. :-(

-Although the storylines concerning the ferrets were given closure, the storylines concerning the humans never were.

-It would have been nice to see Edwin and the white ferrets a little more. (I may be slightly biased because I like Edwin, though.)

-We never get to know Puffball before he dies, save for the snippets of information given about him in book three.

 

Overall, this is a very cool manga series, worth plenty of re-reads. As the ever-quotable Brighteyes once said, it's "Super peachy-keen!" :-D

U.S. Acres:Jim Davis' Lesser-Known Comic Strip

U.S. Acres was a newspaper comic written by Jim Davis, creator of Garfield, in 1986. The strip(which was known as Orson's Farm outside America) followed the wacky hijinks of several kooky farm animals. The cast consisted of the polite, intellectual pig Orson who was the strip's main character, the bossy, loudmouthed rooster Roy, the cowardly but lovable duck Wade, the feisty little chick Booker who would often try(and fail) to catch a worm, his easygoing little brother Sheldon(no relation) who lived inside an egg shell which had similar properties to Snoopy's doghouse, the friendly but not-too-bright sheep Bo(he was more of a surfer dude type in Garfield and Friends), and his grumpy sister Lanolin who would often spar with Roy.

In Garfield and Friends, the group was often antagonized by Orson's three big, nasty brothers Gort, Mort, and Wart(who had appeared in the strip previously, albeit for only the first few weeks). Orson's brothers lived on the farm next door and would often come over to Orson's farm to steal food or cause some sort of trouble.(Which they fortunately were never successful at!) Further antagonists were a weasel, a fox, and a wolf, all of whom had the same goal:to steal chickens. (Honestly, IMHO, it would've made more sense for the wolf to be stealing sheep, but there it is.)

A pair of temporary additions to the cast were Cody the dog and Blue the cat(The latter being of obvious coloration). This may be just IMHO, but it seems that part of the reason for these characters' short-lived career(although they did appear in the various kids' books) seemed to be the fact that they didn't have quite as much personality as the rest of the cast(Cody in particular didn't seem to have any personality at all other than chasing and attacking the other animals). On a related note, for unknown reasons, Cody and Blue also never appeared on Garfield and Friends. (One could possibly call them "The Lymans of U.S. Acres.")

The comic had a small fanbase, though it never became quite as popular as Davis' more famous strip, Garfield, and only ran for three years.(Although the franchise had a much longer lifespan on Garfield and Friends.)

Overall, U.S. Acres was a fun, humorous, and very nifty comic with a good, likeable cast. Despite it never having quite the popularity Garfield did, it's definetly worth a read! (Or, "worth a watch" in the case of Garfield and Friends.)

Come on in, Come to the Place Where Fun Never Ends...

...Come on in, It's Time to Party With Garfield and Friends!

Garfield and Friends was the first TV show to star that famous fat cat we all know and love. It was very popular in its heyday(and still is!), and ran for a whopping seven years. 

The show consisted of two(or occasionally four) Garfield segments, starring the lasagna-loving cat himself, as well as his well-meaning but inept owner Jon and dopey but friendly doggie pal Odie, as well as occasional appearances by guest pest Nermal, the unbearably loud Binky the Clown(he even had his own mini-segments within the show entitled, "Screaming with Binky"), Garfield's on-again-off-again girlfriend Penelope(Not Arlene?), and his mouse buddy Floyd. Shown between Garfield segments were U.S. Acres segments, based off of Jim Davis' lesser-known strip.(Which I'll be covering in my next post!)

 

 

Overall, Garfield and Friends was a very cool, funny, well-made show. The storylines are humorous, with jokes borrowing heavily from the comic strips, and the characters are, as always, good, funny, and likeable. Personally, I've always loved this show.(And still do!) A high-quality masterpiece that any Garfield aficionado will surely enjoy.

This very nifty collection of comics is enjoyable for kids and nostalgic adults alike. Included in this collection are a wide variety of comics ranging from familiar standbys(Little Lulu, Pogo, Donald Duck, Dennis the Menace, Gerald McBoingBoing, Uncle Wiggly et al.) to more obscure ones(Supermouse, Powerhouse Pepper, J. Rufus Lion, Egghead Doodle, The Pie-Faced Prince et al.)

The comics range from cute to funny to exciting to freaky weird!

The famous fat cat offers his not-so-humble opinion on a variety of subjects, from clowns to convenience stores, farms to figure skating, parties to plastic surgery...well, you get the idea.

Square Root of Minus Garfield=?!

Another very nifty site is Square Root of Minus Garfield. According to the site's creators, the site gets its name from the fact that in mathematics, the square root of a negative(or "minus") number is an imaginary number, hence, "imaginary" Garfield comic strips. As per this, this site contains many funny(and funny-looking) comic strips.

Real Gone Garfield

It's Garfield as you've never seen him before! Garfield Minus Garfield is a site dedicated to removing the famous orange fuzzball from the comic strip, leaving the now apparently schitzophrenic Jon talking to himself. It's hilarious and weird all at the same time.

Donald Duck in Trail of the Unicorn

This unicorn looks like he ought to switch to low-cal oats.

As per my previous post, I found this very nifty Donald Duck comic online. Uncle Scrooge has called Donald and the kids to help him find a unicorn for his zoo, for which he'll pay handsomely. Scrooge mentions having seen one in the Himalayas, so Donald and the kids trek off to India in hopes of procuring one of these fantastic beasts, but Gladstone Gander plans to sabotage their efforts (as usual). If you like Donald Duck and you like unicorns, this is the comic for you!

Who's got the sweetest disposition?

One guess. Guess who?

Who never, ever starts an arguement?

Who never shows a bit of temperament?

Who's never wrong, but always right?

And those last two lines of this famous song were never more true than in this comic collection by the late, great Carl Barks, creator of Scrooge McDuck, Gyro Gearloose, the Beagle Boys and many others. This high-quality collection follows the eponymous duck and his ever-present nephews (with the occasional company of Daisy, Uncle Scrooge, and jerkwad extrordinaire Gladstone Gander) on many exciting (and hilairious!) adventures. Some must-reads are:

Toyland-Santa calls on Donald and the kids to test the toys in his workshop before he makes his nightly run, but they have a little too much fun with this task.

The Crazy Quiz Show-Donald expects to win big on a game show, but the kids keep one-upping him.

(This story contains a shout-out to Mickey Mouse, BTW.)

 

 

Donald Duck's Worst Nightmare-Donald seeks a cure for his recurring nightmares, but will the cure end up being worse than the disease?

 

The Sunken Yacht-Donald and the kids discover a sunket yacht and hope to strike it rich by salvaging it. (This story is particularly notable in that the method used to salvage the yacht was tested in an episode of Mythbusters.)

 

Managing The Eco-System-In what may be the most hilarious story in this collection, Donald and the kids try to match each other in a battle of echoes.
