My Cat is Simply Out of This World!

You've got a friend in me,
When the road looks rough ahead
And you're miles and miles from your nice warm bed,
You just remember what your old pal said
'Cause you've got a friend in me.

Here is a Kid vs. Kat fanfiction, which was a collab between my good friend brave kid and I(He had the initial idea, and I wrote the story), which is the first in a series he and I will be writing in the future. In this reimagining/retelling of the series, Mr. Kat, now an intergalactic reporter rather than an evil villain, tires of his humdrum life on his home planet. When he's given the opportunity to search for a news story on a new planet, he jumps at the chance, but is unfortunately thrown off course by his foe the evil hamster Eeks and crash lands on Earth. Upon being discovered by the Burtonburger family, he's soon adopted by them...but what might happen when his secret is discovered? Please enjoy!

BW, here's a pic of the now good Mr. Kat in the series. He's Scooby to Coop's Shaggy, Bandit to Coop's Johnny Quest, and Rufus to Coop's Ron Stoppable!

Music Showcase: Ya Wanna Buy a Bunny? by Spike Jones

A humorous ditty told from the POV of a little boy who's overrun with pet bunnies who are giving him no end of trouble. Please enjoy!

BTW, there was also a cover of this song by famous kids' song laureate Joanie Bartels, which is available for download at this link. A good gift for younger fans of novelty songs.

Joke of the Week #57

Amy: "We had to find a new home for our Dachshund."

Molly: "Really? Why's that?"

Amy: "Well, it took him so long to come in the front door, he kept letting all the bugs in."

Cartoon Showcase:Ferret and Parrot

This short cartoon was originally one of Cartoon Network's candidates for a new series back in 2001.
This humorous little film stars a moody and somewhat naive ferret(not unlike Peach, in a way), his somewhat stoical parrot friend(who has the annoying habit of repeating everything he hears!), and their inept owner(who, coincidentally, bears a passing resemblance to Mimi's dad, Bud). When Ferret spies a comic strip about a cute girl ferret named Yolanda at the bottom of his cage, he's smitten with its protagonist and conspires to ask her out on a dinner date...but this might be easier said than done! Please enjoy!

Just Peachy

Peach Fuzz is a nifty little ameri-manga series written by husband and wife team Jared Hodges and Lindsay Cibos. This short-lived series, which was the winner of Tokyopop's second Rising Stars of Manga competition, chronicles the adventures of sweet fourth-grader Amanda Keller and her wacky, lovable pet ferret, Peach.(No relation.)

Volume One:

The first volume establishes the story and characters. Nine-year-old Amanda's mother has finally consented to let her have a pet, but Amanda doesn't want an ordinary one, such as the usual dog, cat, fish, hamster et al. One look at the ferrets, however, and she's instantly smitten. She picks one and names her Peach(due to her fuzziness), little knowing that Peach is a very prissy ferret who fancies herself a princess(Princess Peach?), and has the Walter Mitty-esque tendency to fantasize ordinary things as extraordinary, such as envisioning her cage as a dungeon, Amanda's toys as monsters, and Amanda's hand as a vicious, five-headed beast called the Handra!

Worse still, when set upon by this "Handra", Peach bites in defense! It's up to Amanda to train Peach to behave...but will she be successful?

Volume Two:

Amanda has successfully trained Peach(Finally!) and plans to take her to school for show-and-tell. Amanda isn't very popular in school, and hopes that her new pet will stack the odds in her favor;unfortunately, while Peach is quite popular with the class, Amanda herself still gets left out. :-(  A plan is hatched by Amanda's popular(and sometimes sassy) friend Kim Chang(pictured on the cover, above) to get her in good with the class: a ferret costume, made by Kim herself!

Unfortunately, after Amanda gets good props from the teacher for her costume, the(VERY nasty!) school bullies Phil and Tim conspire against her. These guys are really mean, but fortunately, they get their well-deserved comeuppance in the end.

Also introduced in this book is Kim's pet ferret Pavaratty, or "Pava" for short.(Pictured with her on the cover.) Pava is a conceited sort who fancies himself a famous actor/singer/dancer; he rudely chides Peach, denying that she could ever be considered a princess, at which she then gives him what for!

Volume Three:

After Peach escapes from her cage yet again, Amanda's athletic(and rather superstitious) friend Mimi Santini(pictured on the cover, above) suggests that Peach may simply be lonely. At Amanda's request, her mom consents to let her buy a second ferret; Amanda selects a fancy ferret(Peach is a sable) whom her mom names Edwin(after a hero in her favorite novel). Peach is elated by Edwin's presence, fancying him the ferret prince she's been pining for...an emotion that's quickly shattered once she gets to know him. Edwin is very klutzy, goofy, ill-mannered, overly dramatic, and very, very loopy(He believes that vets are aliens, 'nuff said), far from the prince she'd envisioned.

Amanda pays a visit to Mimi's house, where she meets Mimi's equally superstitious family, who are all unnaturally obsessed with mushrooms(...Huh? Mushrooms?), as well as Mimi's albino ferrets Truffle and Spore, with mention also made of the late Puffball(All three of whom are pictured with her on the cover). Like their owner, Truffle and Spore are very superstitious sorts(But also somewhat creepy!); they warn Peach of the curse plaguing their land, and suggest that she and Edwin might be its next victims. Peach, however doesn't believe them...at least, not at first!

Have mercy, those albino ferrets are creepy...but sorta' creepy cool, though.

My thoughts:Overall, this is a very cool, interesting, hard-to-put-down series of comics, with a very clever concept(A comic about a ferret). The comics are well-written, with ginger-peachy artwork, and likeable, relatable characters; the ferrets in particular are cute, funny, and lovable. Each of the books also have some very nifty extra features, such as:

-Peach's Monster Compendium, chronicling the various "beasts" Peach has encountered throughout the story.

-Pavaratty's Ferret Terminology,  in which Pava educates the reading audience on various ferret facts.

-Bios of each major character, complete with sketches.

-Sketches diagramming each major story location(Amanda's house, Mimi's house, the school et al.)

My only major beefs about this series were:

-The series didn't last very long, which IMHO was quite a shame, considering how good it was. :-(

-Although the storylines concerning the ferrets were given closure, the storylines concerning the humans never were.

-It would have been nice to see Edwin and the white ferrets a little more. (I may be slightly biased because I like Edwin, though.)

-We never get to know Puffball before he dies, save for the snippets of information given about him in book three.

Overall, this is a very cool manga series, worth plenty of re-reads. As the ever-quotable Brighteyes once said, it's "Super peachy-keen!" :-D

Here also, though not related to the books, is a(very cute!) ferret princess plushie, perfect for those who might want a "Peach" of their own, or knows someone who does.

A couple of things I just had to add:

Okay, well...

FERRRRRET KOMBAAAAAAT!!!

Love Edwin's expression in this pic, "Huh?"

In The Lemon-Limelight:Littlest Pet Shop

Everything they do is a wow.

Littlest Pet Shop was a series based off of the ever-popular toy line, made by Sunbow Entertainment. It premiered on UPN 20 in 1995.

The show concerned the kindly(but slightly eccentric) pet shop owner Elwood P. Harvey and the group of mouse-sized pets inhabiting his shop. Said pets had the propensity to cause mayhem and get into wacky misadventures, much to Elwood's chagrin.

The main cast of pets consisted of the smart, sensible, but sometimes sarcastic purple cat Chloe who seemed to be the group's leader, the dopey but lovable blue dog Stu(no relation), the witty, British-accented pink rabbit Viv who was something of a musician and whose hat contained a band(consisting of a rat, a mouse, and a squirrel), the feisty, short-tempered yellow horse Chet who acted like a stereotypical cowboy(not unlike Ultimate Muscle's Terry Kenyon*), and the hyper, comedic red monkey Squeaks who spoke in chatters and was obsessed with bananas(Everytime he saw a banana, he'd go DOWNRIGHT CRAZY!!!)

Allies of the group, who appeared on occasion, were the talkative parrot Harriet, Sarge the hamster, who, as his name implied, looked and acted like a millitary sergeant, Bernice, a large yellow hamster who was Sarge's on again-off again girlfriend, and Rookie, a normal-sized Dachshund puppy**. The group's main antagonist was Delilah, a normal-sized Monitor lizard who spoke and acted like Zsa Zsa Gabor. Delilah was forever trying to gobble up the little pets(This behavior, of course, always occured in Elwood's absence). Some other recurring antagonists were a trio of bugs who lived in the pet shop's walls. Occasional appearances were also made by Elwood's globetrotting mother Mumsy.

Episode plots involved various wacky mishaps the pets would get into, such as getting an owner who'd end up not working out, or sneaking into someplace and trying not to get caught; the group would occasionally meet other littlest pets as well(one most notable being a white tiger). Much madcap humor and Looney Toons-cum-Tex Avery-eque slapstick adorned every episode.

The show only lasted a year, with only 40 episodes made. While this show, regrettably, isn't currently available on TV or DVD, four different videos were made, containing four episodes each(except for the Christmas one, which only contains two):

Overall, this is a fun, entertaining, and downright HILARIOUS show that really deserved more attention. The characters are likeable and humorous, and the episodes are a lot of fun. Some fans have (somewhat unfairly) criticised the show's art style and music(Honestly, I'll admit it's no Toy Story 3, but it's pretty well done for something of that era). An underappreciated series that's definetly worth a peek;like the Littlest Pet Shop franchise(as I do) and you like hilarious TV shows(as I also do) this is the show for you!

The theme song captures the show's wacky nature perfectly****

Several action figures were made of the various characters*****, as well as several playsets and a few keychain plushies, all bearing the official Littlest Pet Shop label. These items appear on ebay from time to time.

"It's all for one and one for all, and also slightly off the wall!"

*More on that franchise later....

**Rookie's my fav character, BTW.

***BTW, I highly reccommend the title episode of this video. IT'S A SCREAM-A-MINUTE!!!! :-D
:-D :-D

****Lyrics were later added to the theme song, but regrettably, I haven't been able to find the version with the lyrics. If I do, however, I'll post it here.

Book Review:Rainbow Street Shelter:Lost! A Dog Called Bear by Wendy Orr

Here's a review of the first title of a very nifty new book series from the author of Nim's Island.

The first half of the story features a boy named Logan who lives on a farm, and his beloved border collie, Bear(who's named such because when he was a puppy, he looked just like a little bear-and still kind of does, IMHO). One day, Logan's father sells the farm and moves to a big ranch in the mountains, while Logan and his mother move to the city, taking Bear with them. Unfortunately, on the way to their new house, Bear gets lost, and Logan and his mother search valiantly for him, but their search ends up in vain. :-(

The other half of this story features a girl named Hannah(who coincidentally lives in the same city Logan and his mother are moving to) who loves the beach and, more than anything, would love to have a dog of her very own. Unfortunately, her parents won't consent to this; they give many a reason for why a dog just wouldn't work out for them(Their yard isn't big enough, Hannah might forget to feed the dog, etc.), but Hannah knows better.

Their destinies intertwine when Hannah finds Bear in the back of her dad's pickup truck. Hannah is pleasantly surprised by this, and as such, dubs the dog "Surprise". Upon noticing his collar, however, Hannah discovers that the dog has an owner already, and, in hopes of reuniting him with his real owner, takes him to the Rainbow Street Animal Shelter. Will Logan ever find Bear again? Will Hannah ever get the dog she hopes for?

My thoughts:This is a very sweet, moving, and heartwarming book. The two main characters are very likeable, relatable, and sympathetic, the story is extremely well-written, and the illustrations are simply beautiful. Anyone who loves dogs or has a beloved dog of their own is sure to love this book. (A box of tissues is highly reccommended while reading this book, BTW.) :*)

Music Showcase:Destructive Wave by S-Dynamites

This instrumental song(which IMHO sounds a little like a surfing tune!) is from the video games GuitarFreaks V and DrumMania V. The video it's set to features the misadventures of a Power Rangers-esque team of superhero pets(a dog, a cat and a hamster) who are...really inept! Please enjoy!

For some reason, the monster in this video reminds me of the Junkman from Jimmy Neutron. He does kind of have a similar look about him.

The Game Show:Petz Fantasy Sunshine Magic for the Nintendo DS

"Honey, did you remember to walk the unicorn?"

One of the niftier games in the eponymous Petz series, this game allows you to care for, play with, and train various mythical creatures that hatch out of eggs(you start out with only 2 to choose between, but more eggs are unlocked as the game progresses). One particular point of interest is that the dragon and unicorn are the only pre-existing mythical species in the game; the other species are completely original, such as the energetic mongoose-like Chagron, the prank-loving turtle-like Bublue, the fussy cat-like Mialou, the adorable little winged cow-like Toolin, and the speedy reindeer-like Felir.

Gameplay involves feeding, playing with, and bathing your pets, making sure they're happy. Doing each of these things fills each of their respective needs bars; when all three needs bars are full, a mini-game specific to the pet's abilities(fire, ice, flight, or speed) can be played. Gold, silver, and bronze medals are rewarded at the end of each mini-game, depending on your score. If a gold medal is won, a new pet will be unlocked. Each pet also has favorite toys, food, and cleaning equipment(2 in each respective category); finding out what their favorites are not only fills their needs bars a lot more quickly, but discovering all 6 of their favorites levels them up, giving their skills a boost in the mini-games.

There's another version of this game called Moonlight Magic; regrettably, I don't know much about it since I haven't played it. As far as I can tell from the screenshots I've seen, the only discernible difference is that the pets look different and the game takes place in the nighttime rather than the daytime(These may or may not be the only differences, though).

Pros: -A good, innovative, and highly original game concept.

-Gameplay is fun and easy, with next-to-no learning curve.

          -The graphics are beautiful.

Cons:-Figuring out what the pets' favorite items are takes a lot of guesswork. If you do well taking care of them, however, the pets will give you a hint as to what one of their favorites is.

All in all, a fun game, somewhere between a standard Petz game and an RPG, that has a lot of replay value.
