Fan Fiction Showcase: Rebecca Utonium: Beauty and Brains by Monstarzgirl

This is the first Powerpuff Girls fanfiction written by my good friend Monstarzgirl, which was the starting point for our own collab Powerpuff Girls series. This exciting, fun, and very touching story chronicles the adventures of Professor Utonium's niece Rebecca and how she came to meet Mojo Jojo, and in turn, showed him love and kindness, which ultimately inspired him to mend his villainous ways. A true literary masterpiece. Please enjoy!

The Headless Dogcatcher is Coming!

Just when you thought it was safe to go back to the junkyard...

Here is a Pound Puppies fanfiction, which was a collab between fellow writer brave kid and I(He had the initial idea for the story and title, and I wrote it up), which is a continuation of a series he and I will be writing in the future, which began with our first story, "A Walk on the Flip Side." In this story, the Pound Puppies are planning a Halloween party, which the Super Secret Pup Club are very excited about; presently, Squirt comes by and tells the pups the story of the Headless Dogcatcher, who wears a pumpkin for a head and roams the streets at night, nabbing any dogs or cats he can find and taking them away forever. The pups are quite scared by this, until their old friend Freddie comes by, claiming not to be scared, upon which Cupcake holds a wager with him to stay in the junkyard where the dogcatcher was last seen all night. But will they end up with more than they bargained for? Please enjoy, and a hap-ha-Happy Halloween to all!

BTW, here are a few pics of the story's characters:

Freddie, the friendly but scary-looking pup who first appreared in the episode, "Nightmare on Pound Street." His Halloween-based outfit very much conveys his personality.

Here also is a pic of the Pup Club, dressed as the members of their favorite superhero team the Canine Crusaders for Halloween, and striking heroic poses. Patches is dressed as his favorite hero Captain Mongrel, Rebound as her favorite hero Madame Woof, and Cupcake as her favorite hero Lady Rova. In the story, they wear these costumes when going to the junkyard, with the notion that the Headless Dogcatcher wouldn't dare tangle with superheroes!

She's a Stranger in a Strange Land

Here is a Pound Puppies fanfiction, which was a collab between fellow writer brave kid and I(He had the initial idea, and I wrote the story), which is the first in a series he and I will be writing in the future. In this story, a technical malfunction sends Strudel(from the 2010 series) to a strange other dimension where dogs walk on their hind legs and talk to people(As they did in the original series from the '80s). Strudel is now left in the position of figuring out this odd universe while trying to find her way home again. Things soon go awry when the Pound Puppies' visiting friend Harry is dognapped and held hostage at the villainous Milton Feltwaddle's pound. Can Strudel help her friends rescue Harry and find her way back to her own dimension? Please enjoy!

BTW, here are some pics of the characters' AU guises:

Strudel, garbed in a scientist's outfit. I patterned her appearance slightly on Nose Marie's(With the one curlicue of hair).

Lucky, wearing a jacket like Cooler's with inverted colors, and Cookie, whose outfit conveys her tough-girl persona.

Niblet, wearing a beanie and a t-shirt with a goofy logo, conveying the fact that he's not all there, and Squirt, garbed in biker gear, conveying his feisty attitude. (BTW, the logo on Niblet's shirt says, "Drink Pupsi Cola.")

The Super Secret Pup Club, who are this universe's answer to Whopper, and even have their own Fort Whopper-esque clubhouse. Cupcake also has some of Brighteyes' personality traits now, and Patches has some of Whopper's.(BTW, Patches' hat is based on the one worn by Tuffy from the episode "Tuffy Gets Fluffy" only a different color.)

Dot, who now runs the pound as Holly did in the original series, and has a personality more like Holly's.

The Kennel Kittens, who are good guys in this universe(Which, IMHO is the way it should be!) and play a crucial part in Harry's rescue later in the story.

Toyoshiko the robot dog, who previously appeared in the episode, "Toyoshiko! Bark Friend Machine." In this universe she's been rebuilt and now acts as Strudel's assistant around the lab, as well as Strudel's other assistant Mr. Nut Nut, who is able to speak English in this universe(But still isn't completely all there).

Sweet Pea and Harry, the two polar opposite pups who first appeared in the episode, "Doubles Trouble." Sweet Pea's outfit conveys her prim-and-proper personality, while Harry's(amply mud-stained) outfit, appropriately enough, conveys his wild-and-messy personality.

And finally for the good guys' side, is Dr. Carlton, a Doc Weston-type pound veterinarian who has a minor role in the story.

On the villain's side we have the evil villain Milton Feltwaddle's nephew Morton, who's always all too happy to carry out his uncle's dirtiest deeds(He basically is Brattina to Feltwaddle's Katrina Stoneheart), and Feltwaddle's nasty pet cat Scarface Claw, who had previously been exiled from the Kennel Kittens because he was too mean. His personality is based on that of Catgut, and his name and appearance are based on those of an antagonist from the Hairy McClairy book series.

What. A. Dump.

Here is a Powerpuff Girls fanfiction of mine, which is based off of a Captain Caveman episode from the Flintstone Kids entitled, "Grime and Punishment." In this story, a villain named the Grungebuster(An OC of mine) is completely trashing up Townsville, so it's up to the Powerpuffs to clean up his act. Can the girls stop this larcenous litterbug and withstand Bubbles' incredibly corny jokes? Please enjoy!

BTW, here is a picture of the Grungebuster. I tried to draw him in the style of some of the various background characters on the show.

Uhm, Can't I Have a Serious Moment?

Here is a Powerpuff Girls fanfiction of mine, which is based off of a Captain Caveman episode from the Flintstone Kids entitled, "I Was a Teenage Grownup." In this story, Mojo Jojo, being the ever-present party pooper that he is, uses his new invention, the Adultifier, to turn all of the kids of Townsville into super-serious mini-adults. When a stray laser from the Adultifier hits Bubbles, thus robbing her of her fun-loving persona, it's up to Blossom and Buttercup to save her and all of the other kids of Townsville, and put Mojo in his place. Please enjoy!

BTW, here is a picture of Dr. Cooper, an OC I added to this story; she's Townsville's local physician and was rather stumped at why the kids' personalities had changed so abruptly.

It's a Monster's Life

Here is a Powerpuff Girls fanfiction of mine, which is based off of a Captain Caveman episode from the Flintstone Kids TV series entitled, "Attack of the 50-Foot Teenage Lizard." In this story, a gentle little boy monster named Timmy is expected by his parents to smash a city, which he doesn't want to do; fortunately, with the Powerpuffs' help, he finds a way to make his parents proud without hurting anyone. Please enjoy!

BTW, here are a few pictures of the story's characters:

Timmy, the friendly little boy monster who doesn't want to hurt anyone. His appearance is loosely based off of those of Billy, the kid monster from the original Captain Caveman episode.

And Timmy's family, whose appearances are based loosely off of those of Billy's family. Papa Monster is rather gruff, but has a gentle side, Mama Monster is pleasant and accomodating, and Timmy's little sis Dolores is somewhat moody, but can be sweet(She takes after her father that way).

Just for fun, I've also added a picture of Blossom, who's ended up wearing a clown suit after Timmy drops a costume shop on her(Much to her sisters' amusement).

He's Just a Junk Food Junkie, With a Junk Food Pedigree!

This is my latest fanfiction, which is a reimagining/retelling of the Pound Puppies episode, Garbage Night:The Musical.  In this story, Holly takes her furry friends out for a night on the town, upon which they discover Scrounger's started a restaurant serving meals reflecting his culinary tastes(Read:made of garbage*). Meanwhile, the Pound Puppies have to put a stop to Katrina, who's using a garbage truck to lure stray dogs, all with much hilarity ensuing. Please enjoy!

Here, BTW, is a picture of Tommy, an OC I added to the story. He's a busboy at Scrounger's restaurant; he's shown in and out of uniform here.

*Sigh, what would Robert Irvine say?

In the Lemon-Limelight:Help! It's the Hair Bear Bunch

This is the first of my series of articles of underappreciated cartoons that, despite their low fanbase, are still more than worth a peek.

Help! It's the Hair Bear Bunch is a cartoon series made by Hanna-Barbera in 1971. The show concerns three wacky bears living at the Wonderland zoo. The trio consists of the scheming, afro-adorned group leader Hair, the sloppy, doleful Square, and the short, gibberish-speaking Bubi. The bears would often try to flee the zoo in search of adventure, and end up being pursued by the zookeeper, Eustace P. Peevley and his(rather inept) assistant, Lionel J. Botch(The latter of whom is known for his pet phrase, "Ooh! Ooh!" not unlike Welcome Back, Kotter's Arnold Horshack; unsurprisingly, this was Botch's voice actor Joe E. Ross' pet phrase.). The bears, however, usually outwit them in the end, often with the help of their zoo animal friends, such as Bananas the Gorilla (who bears a striking resemblance to Magilla Gorilla), Furface the Lion (gotta love that name!), Bumpo the Elephant, Slicks the Fox, and Pipsqueak the Mouse, among others. One particular point of interest is that the bears owned, among other things, an invisible motorcycle. (Hmm, do you suppose they got it from Mermaidman?)

The show had a very short run, with only 16 episodes made. Reruns can be seen on Boomerang. (Check local listings for the time and channel.)

UPDATE 7/7/12:I recently discovered this DVD which contains, among other(very nifty!) things, a Hair Bear Bunch episode!:

Overall, this was a humorous, well-made show that truly deserved more attention. (I may be a little biased because I love Hanna-Barbera stuff!) Despite the show being made in the '70's, it doesn't seem particularly dated, even by today's standards, and the characters are interesting, funny, and likeable. (Even Peevley and Botch!) A rather underrated(Even Joe Barbera disliked it; when even the producer doesn't like the show, that's the definition of underappreciated!) show that's definetly worth a peek.
The theme song is also mighty catchy!

For those interested also, there are some Hair Bear Bunch items available at the site below(including, of all things, a tissue box cover); some are a little expensive, but well worth it for any Hair Bear Bunch fan :
Many more such nifty items are available on ebay, many of such being comics(which I highly recommend.) :)

"Let's split!"

Fanart of Botch saying his signature phrase.

Another fanart I just had to add. (This one's just silly.)

Book Review:Beezus and Ramona by Beverly Cleary

Here I'm reviewing a classic.

"Little sisters can be difficult...this little sister is impossible!" These words on the cover pictured above couldn't describe Beatrice Quimby's*(better known as Beezus) little sister Ramona better. Ramona has the tendency to do some of the most annoying things imaginable:riding her tricycle through the house(knocking various items of furniture over as she goes), asking Beezus to read her favorite book to her a million times, pestering Beezus' friend Henry Huggins and his dog Ribsy, taking bites out of half a box of apples, baking her rubber doll into Beezus' birthday cake, and inviting a zillion other little kids(each one just as annoying as her, if not moreso) over to her house for a party(unbeknownst to her parents, of course). Put simply, if it's annoying, she does it!
Cue massive scream.
Beezus tries to be patient with Ramona, but it's(dread) hard, and Beezus tends to get really exasperated with her(SHOCK!!), which makes her feel guilty, but what more can she do?

My thoughts:Although it's debatable which Ramona book is the best, this one is certainly a favorite of mine. The author's style is really good, as is the illustrator's, and Beezus and Ramona are good, interesting characters; honestly even, most of the time, Ramona comes off more as "funny-annoying" than "annoying-annoying". Beezus is portrayed well, and in later books, Ramona herself becomes more mature and relatable, even sympathetic. (The annoying/immature torch thus being passed to Howie's little sister Willa Jean.) And even though Ramona and Beezus don't see eye-to-eye most of the time, it's obvious that they really do love each other.
Ramona's only knowing how to write i's and t's(and spelling her name thus), incidentally, reminded me of this exchange from an episode of Full House:
(Stephanie is doing her homework, when Michelle walks in.)
Michelle: "Can I help? I'm good at homework."
Stephanie: "No, Michelle, I'm writing a short story for English class. You can't write, so...you can't help."
Michelle: "I can write i's and t's."
Stephanie: "Great story. 'It, it, it, it, it!'"
Speaking of Ramona's writing, some may recall the way that she would tranform the "Q" in her last name into a kitty cat starting in the book Ramona the Pest and the time in the book Ramona and Her Mother that she transformed the words with double letters in her writing book into angry faces, to express her angry(at the time) feelings:

I couldn't resist.

All in all, a good and very funny book, perfect for any Ramona fan.

*Fans of the Disney sitcom A.N.T. Farm may notice that the character Fletcher has the same last name(Quimby) as Ramona and her family. One wonders whether or not this was intentional.

Pound Puppies TV Series-What If

So, I had been thinking, a litle while ago, about the different continuities of the Pound Puppies, and how some characters who were introduced in the 1985 special hadn't made the cut when the show became a series. Then I got to thinking...what if they had?

Here is my opinion of what it could behave been like. I'm also adding a couple of pictures I drew of how the characters would have looked in the series' art style(Well, to be fair, it's actually more my art style, but I tried to copy the show's art style the best I could):

Has anybody seen these dogs?
I'll begin this what if with the three "missing" Pound Puppies, as I call them. (Scrounger's design, BTW, is based off his design in the episode, "Wagga Wagga", and Violet's design is a combination of her original design and her design in that episode.) Their roles and personalities in the show would be like this:

-Violet would be the group's second-in-command, a role she frequently took in the books.
Personality-wise, she'd still be sweet, polite, and smart, but also tough and adventurous(sort of like Cooler). She'd also, of course, be Cooler's girlfriend.(And you know, in retrospect, it kind of made little sense for her not to be in the series, seeing as that she was Cooler's girlfriend, and that Cooler had no romantic interest in Nose Marie.)

-Barkerville would be the group's strategist, as he was in the books and the '85 special.
Personality-wise, he'd still be polite, proper, and sensible(The most sensible member of the group, even!) His role as a strategist would be taken a step further in the second season; he'd have a computer that he would use to help find homes for the various dogs and cats they would be trying to place(In lieu of the dogs using "Puppy Power," i.e. the strange psychic abilities they apparently had to do this, which IMHO didn't make much sense...honestly, were they dogs or Alakazams?)

-Personality-wise, Scrounger would be...well, Scrounger! He'd still, as always, be sarcastic, hygiene-deficient, and have a voracious appetite. As far as things go, though, in the second season, his color would be changed to gray(as it was in the episode, "Garbage Night:The Musical).

And now, on to the villains:

Flack and Tubbs, the two dognappers from the '85 special, would now be Katrina Stoneheart's henchmen, sort of like Horace and Jasper to Cruella De Vil (One could say that they would now have an outlet for their dognapping). They'd mainly serve as comic relief, with their frequent botch-ups being a source of contant frustration to Katrina, as well as Brattina(and Captain Slaughter in the few episodes in which he appeared).

As per the picture above, the biggest change to them would be their appearance; Flack's sweater, for example, isn't quite as loose-fitting as it was in the pilot episode(i.e. no longer giving him an artificially muscular appearance), his hair is longer, and his beard is a little shorter. Also, in the second season, he'd start wearing fingerless gloves.

Tubbs now has larger eyes, a smaller mouth, and a slightly more visible nose. His scarf is also slightly shorter. In the second season, he'd don an orange sweater-vest(which, as one might expect, would be no more effective in covering his belly than his shirt was).

Personality-wise, the dognappers wouldn't have changed at all; Flack would still be sneaky and sarcastic, Tubbs would still be dopey and klutzy, and their ability to mess things up in hilarious slapstick ways would also remain the same.

(You know, I might be biased because I happen to like these particular characters, but it seemed like Flack and Tubbs kind of got short-shift in the series; they never appeared in so much as one episode, even in a cameo or a flashback. This is particularly hard to understand considering the fact that Dabney Nabbit, Mayor Fist, and Doc Weston have all appeared in at least one episode of the show.)

On an interesting note, the writers of the series apparently had originally intended to make Dabney Nabbit a regular character. (In fact, on some websites and in some books, he's been mistakenly listed as one of the regular characters.) According to some of the model sheets from the show (which show up on ebay from time to time), they had intended to make him a janitor. Huh? A janitor? Honestly, Nabbit just doesn't seem like the type that anyone would acquaint with cleanliness! You know, IMHO, it would have made more sense to have him still be a dogcatcher, and have him also be working for Katrina.(Honestly IMHO, seeing as that he was so popular in the books, it kind of made little sense not to include him.) Also, in the second season, he'd have a catch phrase: "I'll nab 'em, and I'll nab 'em good!"

To take this what if a step further, I wrote a few fan fictions based off of episodes of the TV show in this continuity:
