Joke of the Week #79: Halloween Special

A teenage boy comes in to a costume shop and says, "I'm looking for a costume for a Halloween party I'm going to this evening. Is there anything you'd reccommend?"

"Well," says the cashier. "How about a knight costume? I can give you a metal suit of armor, a silk cape, and a real sword for $50."

The boy hadn't wanted to spend quite that much, so he asked the cashier if he might have something a little cheaper. "Well," the cashier replies. "I can give you one with plastic armor, a cloth cape, and a rubber sword for $25."

This was still a bit more than the boy had wanted to spend, so he asked if the cashier might have something cheaper still. "Well," the cashier replies. "I can give you one with cloth armor, a felt cape, and a cardboard sword for $10."

This was still a little too expensive, so the boy asked one more time if there might be anything cheaper still. "Well," says the cashier. "For $5 I can give you a can of red paint, a paintbrush, and a broomstick."

"Well, that sounds good, but what kind of costume is it?" the boy inquires.

"You can brush the paint on your head, put the broomstick in your mouth, and go as a candy apple."

The Headless Dogcatcher is Coming!

Just when you thought it was safe to go back to the junkyard...

Here is a Pound Puppies fanfiction, which was a collab between fellow writer brave kid and I(He had the initial idea for the story and title, and I wrote it up), which is a continuation of a series he and I will be writing in the future, which began with our first story, "A Walk on the Flip Side." In this story, the Pound Puppies are planning a Halloween party, which the Super Secret Pup Club are very excited about; presently, Squirt comes by and tells the pups the story of the Headless Dogcatcher, who wears a pumpkin for a head and roams the streets at night, nabbing any dogs or cats he can find and taking them away forever. The pups are quite scared by this, until their old friend Freddie comes by, claiming not to be scared, upon which Cupcake holds a wager with him to stay in the junkyard where the dogcatcher was last seen all night. But will they end up with more than they bargained for? Please enjoy, and a hap-ha-Happy Halloween to all!

BTW, here are a few pics of the story's characters:

Freddie, the friendly but scary-looking pup who first appreared in the episode, "Nightmare on Pound Street." His Halloween-based outfit very much conveys his personality.

Here also is a pic of the Pup Club, dressed as the members of their favorite superhero team the Canine Crusaders for Halloween, and striking heroic poses. Patches is dressed as his favorite hero Captain Mongrel, Rebound as her favorite hero Madame Woof, and Cupcake as her favorite hero Lady Rova. In the story, they wear these costumes when going to the junkyard, with the notion that the Headless Dogcatcher wouldn't dare tangle with superheroes!

Book Review: Little Wolf's Haunted Hall for Small Horrors by Ian Whybrow

Here's a review of the third volume of this very cool and highy underrated series.

Little Wolf's Uncle Bigbad, proving that he won't let a little thing like death stop him, has returned as a ghost with many dark and spooky powers, and LW, along with his buddies Yeller, Stubbs, and guest pest Smellybreff, who plan to open a Scare School to help little critters get their scream on, persuade him to be their "School Spirit." Uncle Bigbad obliges, but, apparently being just as untrustworthy as he was in life, he makes things too scary, and ends up scaring the pants off of their students...

Uncle Bigbad makes a wager with the group, promising to share his power of finding lost treasure with them if they can find someone who can stand up to him for five minutes. LW searches high and low, before coming across a bear cub named Normus who's super-strong, brave, and a bit of a bully. Normus proves to be more than a match for Uncle Bigbad's dark powers, but this endeavor may end up being more trouble than it's worth, because Normus spends most of his time bullying and bashing LW and his friends. Can Little and his crew get Normus on their side in time to win the bet?

Not only is that rude, but also very unsanitary! :-p

My thoughts: One of the more interesting books in this series with many exciting moments. This volume gives us our first in-depth look at the various denizens of the Frettning Forest(turtles, lions, bats, alligators, weasels et al.) as well as more of the various surrounding areas. Normus' briefly-seen family are good, well-written characters, as is, of course, Uncle Bigbad. I must admit that Mister Twister's unexplained villain status does still bug me a little bit, but other than this, I had no major complaints. All in all, an excellent and very enjoyable addition to this series, and a must-have for any Little Wolf aficionado.

Joke of the Week #78

Sally: "Quick, ask me if I'm a ferret."

Nona: "Okay, are you a ferret?"

Sally: "Yes, I'm a ferret. Now, ask me if I'm an elephant."

Nona: "Okay, are you an elephant?"

Sally: "No, don't you remember? I just told you I was a ferret!"

Building a Better Bear Trap

Here is a Care Bears fanfiction of mine, which is based on the comic "The Think Box Bollix" from the Donald Duck compilation A Christmas for Shacktown. In this story, little Wonderheart Bear(from the new Welcome to Care-A-Lot Tv series on The Hub.*) has decided to become an assistant to local inventor Brightheart Raccoon, which Grumpy Bear takes umbrage at, thinking that he's nothing but a loony inventor. Upon hearing about Brightheart's newest invention the Brain Booster ray, which enables animals to talk and think like humans(and Care Bears) Grumpy decides to trick Brightheart, hoping to thus expose him for the phony that Grumpy believes he is, and make Wonderheart feel less inclined to work for him, but when things quickly go awry, Grumpy may end up needing Brightheart's help! Please enjoy!

BTW, here are some pics of the various OCs from this story:

The shopkeeper bear, who sells Grumpy the lion costume he wears as part of his plan. He's a bit sleep-deprieved because Grumpy gets him up in the middle of the night.

The mysterious bear that Grumpy meets in the woods, who turns out to be a lion affected by the Brain Booster in disguise, with a craving for...roast bear!

And finally, a monkey affected by the Brain Booster, who informs Wonderheart about the lion's capture of Grumpy, so she can save him.(I patterned her appearance off of that of the monkeys inhabiting the Forest of Feelings, such as Chai.)

Joke of the Week #77

A Tyrannosaurus Rex walks into an ice cream parlor and orders a chocolate sundae. The guy behind the counter is surprised that the dinosaur can talk, but serves him the sundae. The T.Rex eats his treat and hands the guy eleven dollars; not thinking that the dinosaur knew much about money, the guy gives him one dollar back, upon which the T.Rex leaves.

"Please come back soon," the guy calls. "We don't get many dinosaurs in here."

"At ten dollars a sundae, it's no wonder!" the T.Rex replies.

She's a Stranger in a Strange Land

Here is a Pound Puppies fanfiction, which was a collab between fellow writer brave kid and I(He had the initial idea, and I wrote the story), which is the first in a series he and I will be writing in the future. In this story, a technical malfunction sends Strudel(from the 2010 series) to a strange other dimension where dogs walk on their hind legs and talk to people(As they did in the original series from the '80s). Strudel is now left in the position of figuring out this odd universe while trying to find her way home again. Things soon go awry when the Pound Puppies' visiting friend Harry is dognapped and held hostage at the villainous Milton Feltwaddle's pound. Can Strudel help her friends rescue Harry and find her way back to her own dimension? Please enjoy!

BTW, here are some pics of the characters' AU guises:

Strudel, garbed in a scientist's outfit. I patterned her appearance slightly on Nose Marie's(With the one curlicue of hair).

Lucky, wearing a jacket like Cooler's with inverted colors, and Cookie, whose outfit conveys her tough-girl persona.

Niblet, wearing a beanie and a t-shirt with a goofy logo, conveying the fact that he's not all there, and Squirt, garbed in biker gear, conveying his feisty attitude. (BTW, the logo on Niblet's shirt says, "Drink Pupsi Cola.")

The Super Secret Pup Club, who are this universe's answer to Whopper, and even have their own Fort Whopper-esque clubhouse. Cupcake also has some of Brighteyes' personality traits now, and Patches has some of Whopper's.(BTW, Patches' hat is based on the one worn by Tuffy from the episode "Tuffy Gets Fluffy" only a different color.)

Dot, who now runs the pound as Holly did in the original series, and has a personality more like Holly's.

The Kennel Kittens, who are good guys in this universe(Which, IMHO is the way it should be!) and play a crucial part in Harry's rescue later in the story.

Toyoshiko the robot dog, who previously appeared in the episode, "Toyoshiko! Bark Friend Machine." In this universe she's been rebuilt and now acts as Strudel's assistant around the lab, as well as Strudel's other assistant Mr. Nut Nut, who is able to speak English in this universe(But still isn't completely all there).

Sweet Pea and Harry, the two polar opposite pups who first appeared in the episode, "Doubles Trouble." Sweet Pea's outfit conveys her prim-and-proper personality, while Harry's(amply mud-stained) outfit, appropriately enough, conveys his wild-and-messy personality.

And finally for the good guys' side, is Dr. Carlton, a Doc Weston-type pound veterinarian who has a minor role in the story.

On the villain's side we have the evil villain Milton Feltwaddle's nephew Morton, who's always all too happy to carry out his uncle's dirtiest deeds(He basically is Brattina to Feltwaddle's Katrina Stoneheart), and Feltwaddle's nasty pet cat Scarface Claw, who had previously been exiled from the Kennel Kittens because he was too mean. His personality is based on that of Catgut, and his name and appearance are based on those of an antagonist from the Hairy McClairy book series.

Dad: "Yes, son."

Little Jimmy: "An' r'member how you promised that if I touched it I'd be goin' in time-out?"

Dad: "Yes, son."

Little Jimmy: "Well, now that I broke my promise, I think it's prob'ly only fair that you break yours, too."

Joke of the Week #75

At an elegant black tie dinner party, one of the guests lets out a loud, resounding belch that reverberates through the whole room. The host was horrified. "You there!" he exclaims. "Don't belch in front of my wife like that!"

"Oh, I'm sorry," the guest replies. "I didn't know it was her turn."

Classic Cartoon Showcase: Shirt Tales in Nearsighted Bear and Magical Musical Caper

In the first half of this classic episode, the cuddly little heroes are given tickets to the Golden Brothers' Circus, which includes Cosmo the famous performing bear(No relation). Cosmo is a bit nearsighted, but is hesitant to wear his glasses, for fear that he'll look like a nerd; unfortunately, this spells trouble for his performance. Can the Shirt Tales convince Cosmo to wear his glasses before his act goes south?

In the second half, a criminal named the hand(So called because his face has never been seen) has been robbing the ticket booths of several concerts, including that of Rick's fav band the Patriots! Can the furry little superguys stop this faceless fiend before it's too late? Please enjoy!
